Canine chiropractic treatment does not replace traditional veterinary medicine. However, it can provide additional means of treatment for spinal problems, as well as biomechanical and related musculoskeletal disorders. Chiropractic is also an effective treatment for acute or chronic pain syndromes.

Spinal Alignment

The spinal cord runs through the center of each vertebrae. Nerves branch from the spinal cord and connect to other parts of the body; such as organs, muscles, and connective tissue. Nerves transfer information between the brain and other parts of the body allowing for proper function. When there is restricted motion in the spine nerves cannot transfer information correctly. This can lead to poor coordination, dysfunction in organs, muscle imbalances and other soft tissue problems.

Muscle Imbalance

If restriction in the spine is present, the spine loses is normal mobility. This can lead to stiffness, muscle tension, pain, and impairment of performance ability. Every movement from a slight twitch of the tail to the agility work in competition is made possible by the synchronizing of many muscles. If the function of the nerve system, which innervate these muscles, is altered, coordinated movement deteriorates. Missteps from lack of coordination may cause injury to other joints, tendons or ligaments in the limbs and body.
